As children grow, they require consistent dental check-ups and hygiene visits to maintain optimal oral health. During these visits, we also provide education on home oral-care routines, coaching children (initially with parental support) in effective brushing and flossing, and gradually guiding them toward independent care.
Additionally, preventive treatments such as dental sealants and fluoride supplementation may be advised. Dental sealants consist of thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing (occlusal) surfaces of molars—areas that are difficult to clean and highly susceptible to decay. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sealants can reduce cavities in these back teeth by up to 80% in the first two years.
Fluoride works by attracting mineral ions that strengthen the tooth enamel and inhibit decay. The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that children whose drinking water lacks sufficient fluoride (< 0.6 ppm) receive fluoride supplements beginning at around six months of age, and that topical fluoride varnish be applied once primary teeth appear.
These preventive strategies—when combined with good hygiene and regular professional visits—help protect young teeth and may avert more invasive treatments later.
