What is a Dental Extraction?
A dental extraction (also called exodontia) is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the alveolar bone. This procedure may be required when a tooth is severely decayed, damaged, loosened by periodontal disease, or impacted, and cannot be restored to functional health. Extractions are carefully planned and performed under appropriate anaesthesia; follow-up care and discussion of replacement options (such as implants, bridges or dentures) are important to restore function and preserve adjacent teeth and bone.
